Also, I am pleased to announce that Jeff Saeger is continuing as the JWOC Team Coach again this year. We really appreciate his continued interest in and service to the US Junior Team program.
There will be a mandatory JWOC team meeting with Janet and Jeff this weekend at West Point. It will be Saturday afternoon at 4PM at the ski lodge which is where the Middle distance race is being run. If you are at the West Point meet you are expected to be there; no excuses.

Task Force Organized to Plan/Host
Junior World O Champs (2013)
The Bay Area Orienteering Club has formed a task force to investigate making a bid to host the Junior World Orienteering Championships in the future. Current thinking is that 2013 could be the year, so the Task Force intends to report back to the BAOC Board of Directors in August 2009 with our findings. The Task Force would like to gather input from, and communicate with, all orienteers who may be interested in this endeavor, especially BAOC and US orienteers. To this end, we have created a Yahoo! group as a convenient forum for e-communication.
All interested US orienteers are invited to join the JWOCTF Yahoo! group. If you join the group, you will receive e-mails posted to the group, and you may also access the task force archive of e-mails at any time. Here are the steps involved with joining the group:
-
You send an e-mail to JWOCTF-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. In the e-mail, include:
- your name
- the e-mail address at which you wish to receive task force e-mail
- your club's initials
- briefly include your reasons for wanting to join the group
- I will then add you to the group, assuming I am able to validate your request.
- You will then receive an e-mail confirming that you have been added to the group.
If I cannot validate your membership request, I will send you an e-mail asking for more information. Basically, I just want to establish that you are someone with a legitimate interest in BAOC's JWOC endeavor, and that you are not a spammer, solicitor or advertiser.
Please note that in order to post e-mail to the JWOCTF group, you need to be a member of the group and your posts must be sent from the e-mail address you specify in item 1 above.
We look forward to your participation!
Thank you,
Gavin Wyatt-Mair

2008 JWOC Team Results
Of the U.S. competitors at JWOC this year, Tori Borish of COC looks like a promising junior in the shorter distances, placing highest of all U.S. competitors in the Sprint race and Middle distance race. In the long race, Holly Kuestner, also of COC, led Tori by almost a minute, offering an almost even challenge. The men were up against stiff competition, with their best placing in the Long for Andy Strat, in 134th place. All JWOC results.

Coaching Resources
- A USOF publication, Coaching Orienteering (158 pp) includes dozens of exercises for orienteers of all levels. It is not an introduction to orienteering.
It is a reference for the coach who is trying to prepare his/her
team for a higher level of orienteering competition. To order, include your name, address, and $14.50 ($12.00 + $2.50 shipping/handling, check/money order payable to United States Orienteering Federation) to USOF Accounting Services, P.O. Box 1444, Forest Park, GA 30298.

Fund Raising for the U.S. Junior Team
- In 2006 and 2007, we raffled tickets to win a T-shirt quilt similar to the one pictured at right. Funds raised benefit the Junior Team.
- The winners of previous quilts are Suzanne Armstrong and Donna Fluegel. See Suzanne's quilt.
- If you can help the junior team by making a t-shirt quilt for the next raffle winner, contact Janet Porter. T-shirts can be provided by the winner.
- Current fund raising efforts involve selling food at A-meets to hungry orienteers. All Juniors and their families, in fact anyone interested in supporting the effort, are encouraged to volunteer at the Junior Concession Fund Raisers. Please contact Janet if you are interested in helping.
- new! There will be a Silent Auction on June 27, 2009, coinciding with the AGM and Ice Cream Social during the second weekend of the Pacific Northwest O Festival, to raise funds to support USOF Juniors. If you'd like to donate something to the auction, contact Donna Fluegel.
