For the Public -- Come Join in the Fun !!

Find out how exciting the sport of orienteering is at one of our National Orienteering Day (NOD) events being held across the country in September. You don't need to sign up in advance; just show up and have a blast hiking and navigating in the woods. Come by yourself or bring your friends and family. Any way you try it, you'll find O' is the way to go.

Each of our NOD events features newcomer instruction, a variety of courses from beginner through seasoned adventure racer complexity, a souvenir topographic map, and a chance to take home an orienteering compass, USGS map CD, or other sponsor prizes.

Whether your goal is to discover a new sport and seek a course record, bring your JROTC, Scout Pack, or Troop to learn a new way to practice outdoor map-reading and compass skills, or simply to take a purposeful walk in the woods with a friend, orienteering is a great choice. To learn more about O', visit our “What is Orienteering” page. When you show up, just look for one of our key staff wearing a NOD hat; he or she will be most willing to get you started.

Most events have a small fee to offset the price of land permission and map production — you are really going to like our maps. Besides that, just wear a smile and the clothes you would for a hike or run in a local park. Bring a compass, if you have one, or rent one (or maybe win one) at the event.

If you are looking for a different outdoor sport to cover, look no further than orienteering. The US Orienteering Federation has been hosting exceptional orienteering events for over 30 years and today we are over 55 clubs strong..

We really don't want to be the most fun sporting secret, and believe that by coordinating local events throughout the US on the same weekend each year we can best reach the public and you.

What is orienteering? Many say it is the perfect blend of an exciting cross-county race in a wooded setting with the added challenge of navigating on the fly using a map and your mind. For others, it's a relaxing family group hike down a scenic trail. A great way to get a feel for the sport is to view our self-running 40-second NOD PowerPoint show.

With over 30 states hosting NOD events, a nearby NOD event contact will be happy to provide you all the details about events in your area. Visit our Clubs page to find the club nearest you and when they are planning their NOD events.
