Bone's competitive year was an outstanding one. Racing in over 15 North American events, Bone scored seven victories in Men's Elite competition. He finished in the top five in all but two races, and was never worse than seventh. During one stretch from mid May until early November, Bone recorded five straight wins in nationally sanctioned US events. 2001 also saw Bone capture the silver medal at the US Short Course Championships, and earn a spot on the US Team that competed at the World Orienteering Championships, where he competed in all four races. As the year ends, Bone is ranked #176 in the world, the highest ranking of any US male orienteer. Bone's accomplishments in orienteering are not just competitive. As the USOF's Vice President-Competition, he manages areas that include the national event schedule, coaching, mapping, and the standing national teams. His current projects include service on the committee examining the USOF's competitive course and class structure, as well as implementing the International Orienteering Federation's new elite competition program here in the US. Bone's activities are not limited to the USOF. He is an active member of the US Team, often cited by his teammates for the leadership he brings to the group. In addition, Bone is active with his local orienteering club, the Cascade Orienteering Club. He stages events, and spends time introducing the public to the sport, teaching them the basics they need to get started and enjoy the sport. Bone, 27, is a resident of Seattle, WA. This is his second Sullivan Award nomination, having been accorded a nomination in 1999 as well. |
