U.S. OrienteeringTeam

Update, May 26, 2008

At the Chasing the Star meet this past weekend there was some wonderful orienteering brought to us by the folks at the Delaware Valley Orienteering Assocation (DVOA). These three days also served as the Team Trials to pick the team representing the USA at the World Champs in the Czech Republic in July.

I had the pleasure early this afternoon of announcing the team —

For the women: Sandra Zurcher (UNO), Samantha Saeger (NEOC), Hillary Saeger (NEOC), Pavlina Brautigam (WCOC), and Viktoria Brautigam (WCOC), plus alternates Angelica Riley (DVOA) and Cristina Luis (DVOA).

For the men: Eric Bone (COC), Ross Smith (CSU), Eddie Bergeron (SVO), Wyatt Riley (DVOA), and Clem McGrath (DVOA), plus alternates Leif Anderson (SAMM) and Joe Brautigam (WCOC).

Congratulations to all of them!

On behalf of the US Team, I'd like to extend my thanks for a perfectly organized Team Trails that were part of the weekend. I'm not aware of all the folks that made everything work, but I would still like to single out a few of meet director Sharon Siegler's crew who were key to making the Trials run so well:

  • Course setters Randy Hall (sprint), Sandy Fillebrown (middle), and Steve Aronson (long) — wonderful courses
  • Head vetters Tom Overbaugh, Ralph Tolbert, and Ron Bortz (and all their helpers) — everything in the right place
  • Course consultant Eric Weyman
  • Mike Minium from Orienteering Cincinnati, who gave up his chance to run in order to serve as IOF controller for the World Ranking Events (the sprint and the long). Everything worked just the way it was supposed to.

Again, thanks to DVOA for making it all happen.

P.S. In World Cup news, US Team member Sandra Zurcher was interviewed by IOF World Cup organizers after making it to the Final race in the middle distance at the European World Championships.
